A vigilante pedophile catcher has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a suspected predator and forcing him to eat cigarette butts under the threat of calling police if he did not comply.

Jay Carnicom, a father with more than a million followers across social media pages dedicated to ‘vigilante’ predator catching, was arrested by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office in Florida last week on three counts of extortion and two counts of battery.

He was booked into the Clay County Jail but has since been released on bond.

Carnicom’s videos, in which he confronts alleged predators and can often be seen assaulting them, are highly popular on social media and draw millions of views.

But the Clay County Sheriff’s Office has cautioned that although the vigilante’s videos and others like it online may seem noble, they can actually hinder investigations and make it harder to convict predators.

‘We investigated the allegations into the subjects involved in the videos. While we can’t provide specifics on those investigations, there’s a plethora of legal reasons why we can’t pursue charges in these types of situations,’ a Clay County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson told the Daily Mail.

‘And it’s because of these vigilante actions and methods.’

The spokesperson added that the sheriff’s office ‘takes these investigations extremely seriously,’ and that they have looked into ‘over 200 cybertips and made over 10 arrests’ just this year.

Carnicom has posted hundreds of videos confronting and assaulting suspected child predators on social media. He is pictured grabbing an alleged pedophile in one of his videos, which has received 5.8 million views just on Instagram

Carnicom could then be seen launching the suspected predator into a chain link fence. The chief of investigations at the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said he suspects the motivation for these kinds of videos is attention and money

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office explained that the process to build probable cause to secure an arrest warrant and develop evidence that is admissible in court requires following strict legal procedures from day one.

The spokesperson added that civilian adults posing online as children to lure predators does not meet a criminal threshold and cannot be used as probable cause for an arrest.

‘When vigilantes get in the way, it’s not only extremely dangerous from a public safety aspect but it hinders law enforcement investigations before they can even make it to court,’ the spokesperson said.

Chief of Investigations Domenic Paniccia also questioned the motivation behind the vigilante content to News4JAX because in many cases, the people featured in the videos do not face any legal repercussions or consequences outside of the beating they receive.

‘I truly believe that in most of these cases, it’s done for monetary gain, for views, clicks and subscribers,’ Paniccia told the outlet.

‘If it’s not done properly, it’s hurting us. It’s hurdles that we don’t need to cross. We would love to take these cases from the beginning and do a proper investigation.’

The sheriff’s office spokesperson told the Daily Mail that they are founding members of the Northeast Florida Intercept Task Force, which has investigated more than 1,600 cases since 2023, ‘a majority involving child exploitation and child sexual abuse material.’

‘We are not in this for clicks, likes and views. We are here to hold offenders accountable and put suspects in jail,’ the spokesperson added.

Carnicom was arrested on charges of battery and extortion. Police have said that his amateur sting operations make it harder to secure convictions

Carnicom has posted hundreds of videos of him confronting alleged pedophile predators on his Instagram and Facebook pages, and he has a website with longer videos blocked behind a paywall.

The vigilante predator catcher admitted to followers that his amateur investigations and sting operations are unusable by police, but vowed to keep making videos that hold pedophiles accountable when law enforcement’s hands are tied.

In a video posted in March, Carnicom said, ‘I’m making this video to address the people who ask me why I don’t get more convictions or why I don’t call the police and let them handle it.’

‘If you see me smack a child predator, most of the time, I’ve already called… the police, and they told me because there was no real child or I wasn’t a law enforcement officer, they couldn’t do anything,’ he continued.

Carnicom explained that most of the alleged predators he communicates with online do not use explicitly sexual language because they know they could be arrested for doing so.

‘A predator doesn’t say anything sexual, they just talk about meeting a 13-year-old, and they don’t say they want to kiss or anything, they just want to talk and meet up,’ Carnicom said later in the video.

‘The police aren’t gonna come convict that guy because he technically, legally didn’t do anything wrong. But we all know it’s f***ing weird for a grownup to meet a 13-year-old kid off of the internet, or anywhere,’ he continued.

‘So, I’m gonna catch that guy, and I’m gonna smack him, and I’m gonna expose him.’
