Canada‘s election later this month is neck and neck just two weeks out as voters are split over the major party leaders. 

The latest DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners Poll of over 1,000 Canadian adults between April 9 and 11 found that Liberal leader Mark Carney holds a slight edge over Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. 

Respondents backed Carney with 39 percent of the vote while 37 percent went for Poilievre. 

The remaining 22 percent was split among fourth other candidates from different parties. The margin of error was 3.4 percent.

Carney’s narrow two-point lead comes as the nation galvanizes against President Donald Trump, who has seen his popularity plummet in the country following his tariffs on the U.S. neighbor.

The Republican is pushing for Canada to become the ’51st state’ which has prompted a widespread political appetite to push back against the president. 

According to the poll, the number two issue for voters in the election, behind installing a stable government, is to pick a candidate for Prime Minister who will stand up to Trump.

‘It is too close to call, with the Liberals with a two-point lead over the Conservatives,’ J.L. Partners co-founder James Johnson told DailyMail.com of the results. 

The pollster pointed out that the lead was well within the survey’s margin of error.

‘One of the top asks of a new government is to stand up to Donald Trump,’ he added. 

‘This has become the ‘Trump Election.”

Other top issues for voters are how leadership will address immigration, get spending under control and building more housing. 

Liberal leader Carney is the former head of the Bank of Canada and has positioned himself as fit to deal with the country’s trade tensions with the U.S. 

Conservative leader Poilievre has run on a ‘Canada First’ agenda, similar to Trump’s MAGA ‘America First’ platform. 

Though emulating Trump’s style has become a sticking point and may or may not resonate with voters. 

‘Carney is the most popular candidate of all standing – ‘smart’ and ‘intelligent’. Poilievre is positively viewed as a leader, but there are concerns about arrogance,’ Johnson shared. 

‘And he is associated with Trump – 47 percent say he is the leader most similar to Donald Trump,’ he added.

The survey results show that Carney also beats Poilievre in younger and older demographics while those who are working age opted for the conservative. 

The majority of respondents, 56 percent, say the country is on the wrong track. 

The election will take place on April 28.

If Carney’s Liberal party wins a majority in parliament it would extend its decade-long hold on power.

Speaking on the campaign trail this week, Harvard-educated Carney said: ‘His (Trump’s) strategy is to break us so America can own us.

‘We are over the shock of the betrayal. But we should never forget the lessons.’
