Surprising entry-level job paying $80-an-hour

A FIFO recruiter has revealed an entry-level job that pays up to $80 an hour.

Recruiter Alana Mohi said applicants can earn that hourly rate by driving buses on mining sites in Western Australia.

She said the pay varies depending on the location, but it was possible for some drivers to earn $110,000-a-year.

‘It’s classified as an entry-level job because … all you need is your heavy rigid driver’s license and the passenger transport driver authorisation,’ she told Yahoo.

She said drivers earning more than $80 an hour is ‘not the norm’, but that it can be done by working a nightshift during a shutdown.

According to jobs board Indeed, the average base rate for a bus driver in Australia is only $36 per hour.

One advertisement for a bus driving job at the mines offered 11-hour shifts on a roster of two weeks on and one week off.

‘You will play a key role in safely transporting passengers to and from the village, mine site, and airport, ensuring safety and reliability,’ it read.

In addition to driving the bus, workers would be expected to conduct vehicle inspections and support other workers when required.

Ms Mohi said the role would be a good launching point for workers looking to move into even more lucrative FIFO jobs through local networking.

‘Bus driving is one of the best jobs for somebody wanting an entry-level job and they’ll generally put you on the smaller buses before you go into the big 56-seaters or bigger than that,’ Ms Mohl said.

She said it was ‘super easy’ to land one of the jobs.

One of the benefits of the role, Ms Mohi added, is spending shifts inside of an air-conditioned vehicle and out of the heat.

The recruiter previously revealed unskilled workers could still land themselves in a six-figure mining role, working as a drilling offsider.

The drill assistants can earn as much as $150,000, though the work can be tough.

Ms Mohi described it as one of the best entry-level mining jobs.

Drilling offsiders are required to prepare the drill rods for holes in the sites, and must maintain the systems which lubricate the drill bit.

They must also record the performance of the drill and log operations and samples among other tasks, completed over day and night shifts.
