A baby has died at a family home-based day care centre in Melbourne.

Paramedics rushed to the Balinga Drive address in Skye in the city’s south-east around 2pm on Wednesday.

A neighbour reportedly heard screams from the home shortly before emergency services arrived, but paramedics were unable to revive the child.

The cause of infant’s death is currently unknown.

A major crime scene was established at the home, which remained cordoned off on Wednesday night, and police were seen speaking with a woman outside the home.

WorkSafe officials also attended.

‘Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death of an infant at a family day care facility in Skye,’ a police statement read.

‘An investigation into the circumstances is ongoing but the death is not being treated as suspicious.’

Police (pictured at scene) don’t believe the baby’s death is suspicious

It’s understood the daycare is run from a private home and looks after a small group of children each day.

The facility, currently listed as ‘exceeding’ national standards, is licensed and government-regulated.
