One dead in shooting at Franklin High School in El Paso

Police shot and killed a man in his 50s at a high school in El Paso, Texas.

Officials said an officer from the El Paso Independent School District shot the man outside the campus of Franklin High School in West El Paso.

The incident took place before classes had started prior to 6am, and no students were injured. 

Some students participating in a cross-country race who were near the site at the time were taken to a secure area.

School principal Amanda Bowser issued a statement on Thursday morning confirming classes were canceled due to an ‘overnight incident.’

 The surrounding area will remain closed while the investigation is ongoing

‘Law enforcement is investigating, please stay clear of the area,’ she said in an alert posted to the school website.

‘The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and we are working closely with authorities to address the situation.’

El Paso ISD issued a statement confirming no students were involved.

‘There is no danger to the community, students, or staff. One person died as a result of this incident. Outside agencies are assisting El Paso ISD with the investigation.’

The El Paso ISD services 95 schools and more than 60,000 students in West Texas, making it the largest school police department in the region. 

Chief of Police Manuel Chavira said his team received an initial report of an incident taking place on campus Thursday morning.

He reassured the community that no students, faculty or staff were impacted.

The surrounding area will remain closed while the investigation is ongoing.

Nearby Coronado High School issued a statement on Thursday morning confirming it would be a ‘normal school day’ despite the incident.

‘We will have extra police monitoring the area,’ the school said.
