A man who allegedly stole a car belonging to a Labor MP’s husband before he was shot in the neck by police has died, as his mother laments that he was ‘more than just a car thief’.

Father-of-three Brendon Liebe took a bullet to the head in Sydney‘s west when police opened fire on an allegedly stolen car containing him and another man as it accelerated towards them last Friday.

Karen McKeown, the state member for Penrith, called police when she realised her home had been broken into and her husband Brendan’s car was missing earlier that morning.

Police followed the car’s tracking device to a carpark underneath an apartment block on Lane Street in Wentworthville, where they allegedly found the men inside the vehicle.

The men allegedly drove the stolen car towards five officers, before three of them opened fire.

Liebe was shot in the head, leaving him in critical condition in Westmead Hospital’s intensive care unit, while the other man was shot in the leg.

The officers immediately rendered first aid until paramedics arrived.

Liebe’s mother, Tracey, revealed on Wednesday that her son had succumbed to his injuries.

‘He was much more than just a car thief,’ Ms Liebe wrote on social media.

‘He was a dad, he was a brother. A nephew. He was a lost soul. A lonewolf. He was MY son. He was a grandson.

‘He was loved by many… I’m so angry. And hurt right now at the same time.’

Ms Liebe said she blamed both herself and ‘the cops’ for her son’s death.

‘I blame everyone that didn’t accept him for who he was,’ she wrote.

Ms Liebe’s post was flooded with well-wishers.

‘Fly high, beautiful boy,’ wrote one.

‘Heaven received a beautiful angel today.’

Another added: ‘There’s so many angels waiting to welcome him with open arms and loving hearts.’

Daily Mail Australia has approached NSW Police for comment.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb previously said a critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will investigate the shooting.

Ms McKeown previously said she had been ‘shaken from the events (but) thankfully I am unharmed’.

The MP’s wife thanked police for their ‘bravery’ and for responding to the alleged incident promptly.

‘Political leaders often praise police for their bravery. Today, I have had a first-hand experience of this,’ she added.
