How Guz Khan accused Israel of ‘genocide’ and made Priti Patel jibe: Comic’s string of controversies as his comedy Man Like Mobeen comes to an end after eight years on screen

He’s been the star of a beloved BBC comedy for four successful seasons.

But although Guz Khan won viewers over in Man Like Mobeen – which will not be returning to screens after its upcoming fifth and final season – the comic has been at the cente of a string of controversies in recent years.

Khan has a history of controversial political remarks, including a seemingly racially-charged jibe’ on X, formerly Twitter, about Priti Patel that led to him being dropped by Uber Eats.

In 2020, Khan posted a photo of the then Home Secretary pulling a face with the message: ‘Shall we have a curry for dinner toranight Priti?’

His comment appeared to incite a string of disgusting responses including that the Ms Patel was a ‘coconut’ – a vile term for someone accused of betraying their heritage by pandering to white views or opinions.

An ally of Ms Patel said at the time that it was ‘beyond ironic’ that she received ‘racist abuse’ because of tweets from ‘another person of colour’.

Khan has prolifically posted on social media in support of Palestine since the Hamas terror attacks in southern Israel on October 7.

The star posted a string of anti-Israel tweets accusing the Jewish state of ‘genocide’ and ‘ethnic cleansing’.

Man Like Mobeen, starring Guz Khan, will not return to screens after its upcoming fifth season on the BBC

Guz Khan has been outspoken in his support for Palestine since the Hamas attacks in Israel on October 7 last year

In 2020, Khan posted a photo of then Home Secretary Priti Patel pulling a face with the message: ‘Shall we have a curry for dinner tonight Priti?’

His comment, taken as a racially-charged, appeared to incite a string of disgusting responses including that the former Home Secretary was a ‘coconut’

The announcement last year that he would take charge of a version of Have I Got News for You, aired on BBC One, was criticised at the time.

One BBC staffer told the Times they were ‘lost for words’ he had been booked given the high probability that the conflict in Gaza will be mentioned on the satirical current affairs show.

A senior Tory called the decision ‘appalling’, adding: ‘It is quite clear that the BBC has lost all sense of impartiality and public service standards. No one at the BBC is ever held to account over such decisions.’

The Man Like Mobeen series, created by Khan and Andy Milligan, sees former drug dealer Mobeen try to lead an honest life in Small Heath Birmingham after years of leading an unlawful lifestyle.

He tries to balance living according to Muslim family values while trying to raise his little sister Aqsa, and socialising with his pals Nate and Eight.

Comedian Khan confirmed the show’s return next year for it final season.

The actor, who has also appeared on Task Master, told the publication that the only reason why he wrote another season was for the fans.

He said viewers were eager to know the next part of the story and get closure after Mobeen was attacked in prison.

He said: ‘I can’t even shop at Aldi without someone popping out from behind the bread aisle and asking me when there’s going to be more Man Like Mobeen.’

‘So, for you, and only for you, here’s one, final, very last, never to be done again season of Man Like Mobeen.

‘Please don’t make me make any more, I got loads of kids to raise and that.’

The series has become a huge hit among BBC viewers as the show scored 87 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

For the final season, filming has already started in Coventry and Turkey.

Across the six new episodes, which will air on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer in 2025, the series promises a finale which quenches the thirst of what follows Mobeen’s attack.

The fifth season will see Mobeen out of prison and reunited with the gang.

He is set  go on a huge adventure if he can secure a plane ticket and fake passport.

Cast also returning include Salman Akhtar (Lootin’) as Saj, Duaa Karim (DI Ray) as Mobeen’s younger sister Aqsa, Mark Silcox (Mandy) as the true OG Uncle Shady, Korkmaz Arslan (My Sweet Pepper Land) as Turkish barber Emre, and Hussina Raja (Informer) as Mobeen’s crush Nida.

The series is written and co-created by Khan and Andy, who together were named Best Writer three years running at the RTS Midlands Awards.

Man Like Mobeen previously won Best Comedy at the 2020 Broadcast Digital Awards and was nominated for Best Comedy at the 2021 BAFTAs.

Series 4 achieved an average audience of 1.1m and was the top performing BBC Three comedy of 2023.
