Four police officers were shot in rural Kansas as they responded to a domestic violence incident, officials said.

The shooting happened at 10.24am Saturday at 11222 S Topeka Ave in Osage County, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Three Osage County deputies and one Kansas Highway Patrol trooper were shot when gunfire suddenly ‘erupted’ after being on scene for less than 10 minutes.

The police officers were rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police confirmed that a man had been killed in the shooting, but his identity was not being disclosed for now.

Another man at the residence was injured and taken to the hospital but appeared to be in stable condition.

‘Multiple, multiple law enforcement agencies responded immediately when the call went out,’ Tony Mattivi, the KBI director, said. ‘We want to thank all of those departments for their assistance this morning.’

Erik Smith, the superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol, said the three Osage County deputies had been taken to the Stormont Vail hospital in Topeka.

The trooper was initially also at Stormont Vail before being transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center for further treatment ‘for some of his injuries.’

Smith said he was speaking at Saturday’s press conference because the Osage County Sheriff, Chris Wells, was with his deputies.

The KBI said there was no active threat to the public and added that an investigation into the officer-involved shooting was ongoing.

The Daily Mail reached out to the Osage County Sheriff’s Office and the KBI for further comment.
