Updated:

A family member of a victim of Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann fled court today after hearing graphic details of his murder plots.

A member of the public gallery shouted ‘I can’t’ before rushing out of court after the state went over the horrific details laid out in his grisly murder ‘planning document,’ including a pictures inside his basement where victims were tortured.

The depraved killer broke his silence in court today before being handed seven life sentences for murdering eight sex workers on Long Island between 1993 and 2010.

Heuermann stood and simply said ‘I am responsible for all that was said in this room. The words I say will have no meaning,’ before sitting back in his chair. He claimed he was sorry before victim’s family members shouted ‘no you’re not!’ and the killer was swiftly escorted away.

Cheers of ‘ogre!’ were heard as he was taken away from the courtroom, with one woman shouting: ‘I hope they r*** you in the a** and kill you.’

The 62-year-old architect will spend the rest of his life behind bars after he pleaded guilty to the murders of Sandra Costilla, 28, Valerie Mack, 24, Jessica Taylor, 20, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Megan Waterman, 22, and Amber Costello, 27, in April.

He also admitted to the 1996 murder of an eighth victim, Karen Vergata, 34, for which he has never been charged.

The killer will serve three life sentences without parole, as well as four with parole, all to be served consecutively.

Rex Heuermann’s planning document was like a ‘shopping list for murder’

Earlier in court today, Suffolk County DA Ray Tierney said that the clearest window into Heuermann’s true character was his planning document that he compiled to commit his murders.

Tierney argued that the document read like a ‘shopping list for murder’ and that it was clear the victims meant nothing to him.

It included reminders about controlling noise levels and prompted him to get adequate sleep before a ‘hunt.’

‘If too tired, it causes problems,’ the note read.

The document also contained the phrase ‘small is good,’ which prosecutors said reflected his preference for targeting petite women despite his imposing size. ‘This is a hulking individual going after small women. He is a coward,’ Tierney continued.

Heuermann relied on burner phones, fake email accounts and other methods to conceal his identity during the murder sprees.

Grisly pictures of his basement that he used to torture his victims were also shown in court.

Gilgo Serial Killer Rex Heuermann is sentenced before Judge Timothy Mazzei at Suffolk County Court in Riverhead on Wednesday, June. 16, 2026.

I used to argue with my co-worker all the time – I thought it was harmless but little did I know what he was really doing when he went home each night

He had seemed like a normal family man who worked hard and got on well with his co-workers but secretly he was allegedly leading a double life and went undetected for years.

Muriel Henriquez had worked with Rex Heuermann when she was office manager at his architectural design firm in Manhattan, New York, in the early 1990s. She was gobsmacked when she discovered he had been arrested for allegedly being the Gilgo Beach Serial Killer.

Speaking exclusively to The Daily Mail she recalled how they’d bicker about politics, argue about the bookkeeping and chat about his love of guns and his trips to the shooting range.

Victim Karen Vergata’s sons were present in court today

Paul and Eric Darty, Karen Vergata’s two sons, were present in court on Tuesday for Heuermann’s sentencing.

Heuermann admitted to killing Vergata as part of the plea agreement but was never formally charged for her murder.

Sandra Costilla’s sister said her son was left with ‘irreversible damage’ after her death

In a statement read by the prosecution in court today, Ruth Ramos, sister of Sandra Costilla, said that her son Zac was the center of her world.

Ramos said Zac experienced the greatest loss by growing up never knowing her and that her death caused ‘irreversible damage’ and emotional stress on his life.

Amber Costillo’s sister Kimberly Overstreet had a statement read out for her in court on Tuesday

The prosecution read a statement on behalf of victim Amber Costillo’s sister, Kimberly Overstreet, earlier in court today.

Overstreet branded Heuermann a ‘raging, murdering sex addict.’

Before Costillo went missing, she had already met with Heuermann once. In a strategic sting, she tricked him into showing up at her apartment where her roommate confronted him. As a result, he ran away.

Heuermann then contacted Costillo to meet him again, and she agreed. It was the last time she was seen alive.

Because of their first encounter, Costillo’s roommate was able to provide a tip to police about a distinctive green Chevy Pickup truck which, years later, would lead to the identification of Heuermann.

Megan Waterman’s daughter Liliana delivered emotional remarks earlier in court

Megan Waterman’s daughter Liliana, who was just three years old when her mother was murdered, broke down in tears as she spoke in court earlier on Tuesday.

‘Was she in pain? Was she scared? Was she thinking of me? What were her last words? I knew she was trying to build a better world for me. Was this somehow my fault?’ she asked.

She said that by the age of twelve, she had lost her mother, grandmother and grandfather who raised her, and that she never knew her father.

She often wondered what would have happened if she hadn’t lost her mother. ‘Those are questions I will never have answered because of the man who took her life,’ she said.

District Attorney Ray Tierney hugged victims families after Rex Heuermann sentencing

Speaking outside of the Suffolk County courthouse on Tuesday, District Attorney Ray Tierney said that ‘all credit, admiration and inspiration goes to those victim’s family members’ and called them a ‘very tough act to follow when I got up in court.’

‘I want to wreak their revenge by going on and having great lives by being happy, by being fulfilled, by being satisfied. They stood by their loved ones and did a wonderful job and now its a time for them to heal and to go on and realize the tremendous potential that they all have because they are absolutely extraordinary people, so that is my greatest wish for this case,’ he continued.

Tierney also thanked the entire team of investigators as well as the task force and spoke of two special agents and their contribution to the case.

He appeared very moved after the sentencing and hugged the victims families.

Gilgo Beach serial killer’s private ‘kill blueprint’: ‘Play time’ with bodies, stopwatch to beat his record… read the sick notes he kept after each murder

Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann‘s blueprint that he used to kill his victims and evade police for decades has been revealed for the first time.

It involved a meticulously planned four-day ‘kill plan’ which involved luring women to his home in Massapequa Park, Long Island, while his family was on vacation.

He then spent days torturing them, killing them and ‘playing’ with their dead bodies.

Heuermann was so meticulous in his planning he timed to the second how long it took to dump victims’ bodies at Gilgo Beach and made notes to be used for next time.

What Gilgo Beach killer’s wife REALLY knew: Prosecutor reveals chilling truth about life with monster husband… and the ‘interests’ she couldn’t ignore

She was married to Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann for more than two decades, during which time he murdered seven of his eight victims.

She lived under the same roof as him, together raising their children in the Massapequa Park, Long Island, home where he lured, tortured and strangled the young women.

Asa Ellerup has insisted she knew nothing of his crimes.

But, in the three years since he was unmasked as the serial killer, many have questioned how a wife could share a life so closely entwined with a man capable of such horrors and not have suspected anything out of the ordinary.
