Police have launched an urgent public appeal for information about the mysterious death of a young woman along a remote stretch of highway in the Northern Territory.

Emergency services were called to the Barkly Highway about 5.50am on Sunday following reports a woman had stopped breathing after the vehicle she was travelling in ‘allegedly hit a kangaroo’ near Barkly Homestead in the Avon Downs district.

The woman, 27, was unable to be revived and died at the scene.

Her 33-year-old boyfriend was arrested at the scene and remains in custody four days later. 

A NT Police spokeswoman told Daily Mail on Thursday that investigations are ongoing and further updates will be shared when available. No charges have yet been laid.

The woman’s death is being treated as suspicious. 

Police allege the pair were in a dark-coloured Jeep Cherokee parked on the side of the road near the intersection of the Barkly and Tablelands highways for four hours  between 1.30am and 5.30am on Sunday.

Officers seek information or dashcam footage from motorists who were in the area at that time.

Barkly Homestead is a remote roadhouse on a 460km stretch of the Barkly Highway between Tennant Creek and Queensland border town Camooweal. 

It is understood that the couple had been on a 2,000km road trip from south-east Queensland. 

Police said that the couple left Gympie on April 1 and had passed through Ban Ban Springs, Emerald, Winton, Cloncurry, Mount Isa and Camooweal before reaching Barkly Homestead early Sunday.
