Updated:

A missile has struck a helipad inside the US Embassy in Baghdad as Donald Trump‘s war on Iran heads into its third week.

Plumes of smoke were seen above the US embassy in the Iraqi capital earlier amid reports a projectile had struck the government building.

The missile landed within the embassy’s boundaries after the Green Zone, the heavily fortified district that houses Iraqi government institutions and foreign embassies, according to two security officials. The US Embassy has not yet commented.

It comes after Donald Trump said on Truth Social that the US had ‘totally obliterated’ all military targets in ‘Iran’s crown jewel’, Kharg Island.

The US President also vowed to ‘wipe out’ oil infrastructure on the island if Iran continued its attacks on vessels on the Strait of Hormuz.

In recent days, Tehran has launched several attacks on oil tankers on the passage which has seen oil prices skyrocket to $100 a barrel.

Trump posts video following strikes on Iran’s Kharg Island

Donald Trump posted a video clip showing military strikes by the US just hours after the attack on Iran’s Kharg Island, which he said earlier Friday the US had ‘obliterated.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to the White House and the Pentagon for comment.

US Embassy in Baghdad had warned of potential attacks

The US Embassy in Baghdad had renewed high warning levels for an attack just before a missile struck a helipad on the compound.

On Friday, the embassy renewed its Level 4 security alert for Iraq, warning that Iran and Iran-aligned militia groups have previously carried out attacks against U.S. citizens, interests and infrastructure, and “may continue to target them.”

The projectile landed within the embassy’s boundaries after the Green Zone, the heavily fortified district in central Baghdad that houses Iraqi government institutions and foreign embassies, added the security officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to speak with the press.

There was no immediate comment from the US Embassy in Baghdad.

The sprawling embassy complex, one of the largest US diplomatic facilities in the world, has been repeatedly targeted by rockets and drones in the past by Iran-aligned militias.

These groups have recently stepped up attacks on bases hosting US and coalition troops.

A drone strike in northern Iraq on Thursday killed a French soldier and wounded several others stationed there as part of an international coalition.

Russia is using the war in the Middle East to hit Ukraine even harder, Zelensky says, as Iran names Ukraine a ‘legitimate target’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russia is using the war in Iran as a ploy to attack Ukraine with greater strength.

Last night Ukraine was hammered with missiles and drones from Moscow, killing four people and causing damage across five regions of the country, according to Ukrainian officials.

Zelensky said: ‘Russia will try to exploit the war in the Middle East to cause even greater destruction here in Europe, in Ukraine.’

An Iranian politician has said Ukraine is a ‘legitimate and lawful target’.

Ebrahim Azizi, head of Iran’s National Security Commission, said Ukraine was supporting Israel with drones and that this ‘makes the entire territory of Ukraine, based on Article 51 of the UN Charter, a legitimate and lawful target for Iran’.

Last week, President Zelensky said he had offered to provide the US with support over drone warfare.

It comes as President Trump faced backlash from European leaders for easing sanctions on Russian oil, which Trump was warned would ‘fill Putin’s war chest’ against Ukraine.

Indeed, Putin could come out of the war in the Middle East as one of the biggest winners, as global oil prices skyrocket and Russia is one of the world’s largest oil providers.

Iran blasts Israel with two strikes in quick succession, IDF says

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued two updates in the last hour hour saying that Iran has launched several missiles in quick succession towards Israel.

Iran’s state broadcaster also confirmed on its Telegram that a new wave of missiles were launched from Iran towards Israel.

Iran refuses to open Strait of Hormuz despite Trump threats

A former Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) commander has said the Strait of Hormuz ‘will not open’, despite US President Trump’s threats to ‘wipe out’ Khag Island’s oil infrastructure.

The key strategic Khag Island holds 90 per cent of Iran’s oil exports.

The ex-IRGC commander Mohsen Rezaei said: ‘Without America leaving the Persian Gulf and control of the Strait of Hormuz being in the hands of the regional countries and Oman, security cannot be achieved.’

He added that Iran would only consider ending the war once it had received compensation from the US and a ‘100 per cent guarantee about the future, which is impossible without American leaving the Persian Gulf’.

President Macron offers Paris peace talks between Israel and Lebanon

French President Emmanuel Macron has offered to host peace talks in Paris, after saying the Lebanese government is willing to hold talks directly with Israel.

Macron offered to host the discussions and encouraged Israel to accept the opportunity.

Hezbollah, a Lebanese paramilitary group currently targeted by Israel, is separate to the Lebanese government, although it holds seats in parliament.

Mr Macron said: ‘Every possible step must be taken to prevent Lebanon from descending into chaos.

‘Hezbollah must immediately stop the dangerous deterioration it is leading to.

‘Israel must refrain from a large-scale attack and stop the massive attacks, while hundreds of thousands of people have already fled the bombings.

‘The Lebanese government has expressed its willingness to hold direct talks with Israel.

‘Israel must accept this opportunity, open discussions and bring about a ceasefire, find a sustainable solution and allow the Lebanese authorities to fulfill their commitments to Lebanon’s sovereignty.’

US ‘hideouts’ in UAE are ‘legitmate targets’, warns IRGC

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned US ‘hideouts’ in the UAE are ‘legitimate targets’.

Following Washington’s attack of Kharg Island, a statement from an official in Khatam-al Anbiya central headquarters, from which the army and IRGC is run warned UAE citizens to keep away from docks, ports and US military bases ‘to avoid any harm’.

A translation of its statement read:

We declare to the leaders of the Emirates that the Islamic Republic of Iran considers it its legitimate right, in defence of its national sovereignty and territory, to strike the source of American enemy missile launches at the ports, docks, and hideouts of US military personnel in some of the cities of the Emirates.

Iran MP threatens to ‘capture’ US troops if Washington gains control of Kharg Island

Former Iranian foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki threatened to ‘capture’ US troops if Washington dared to seize Kharg Island – a critical oil hub for Tehran.

He said:

If they dare to commit such an act and sit on a part of our soil, why shouldn’t we go to a part of their soil – which now exists in the form of their regional baes – carry our a helicopter landing there, and capture their forces?’

Critical UAE port hit by drone is one of the Middle East’s biggest oil facilities

Fujairah, which is one of the largest oil facilities in the Middle East, has been hit by a drone strike.

It is also a significant location, situated on the Fulf of Oman, for the refuelling of ships.

Due to its locale, ships are not required to travel through the Strait of Hormuz to reach it.

It comes as Tehran has launched several attacks on vessels passing through the strategic passage in recent days.

Israeli Defence Minister: War is at a ‘decisive phase’ and will go on ‘as long as necessary’

Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz said today that the war with Iran is entering a ‘decisive phase’ but that it would continue ‘as long as necessary’.

He made the comments at a situational assessment meeting.

Katz also described strikes by the US on Kharg Island as a ‘severe blow’ to the Iranian regime.

He added that the Israeli Air Force was ‘continuing a powerful wave of attacks on Tehran and throughout Iran’ but only the Iranian people can put an end to the regime.

Iranian politician threatens to capture troops if us seizes Kharg Island

An Iranian politician has threatened to capture US troops if America seizes Kharg Island.

President Trump authorised a wave of strikes that targeted 90 sites on the island, which sees 90 per cent of Iran’s oil exports pass through it, overnight.

MP and former Foreign Minister of Iran Manouchehr MottakiI has said that if the US make landfall on the island or in Iran, the country could seize American troops.

He said:

If they dare to commit such an act and sit on a part of our soil, why shouldn’t we go to a part of their soil – which now exists in the form of their regional bases – carry out a helicopter landing there, and capture their forces?
