US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said that yesterday’s fatal Air Canada collision at LaGuardia airport served as a ‘reminder’ for aircraft passengers to wear their seatbelts while traveling.

The transportation secretary spoke Monday to clarify questions about the crash, which killed both the pilot and copilot and injured several others.

‘When you’re traveling by air, wear your seatbelt. You see the videos of the air crash,’ he said, referring to the runway collision.

‘Wear your seatbelt when you’re on the airplane. As you’ve seen from last night, they do save lives.’

Twenty-five specialists are now on site to investigate the fatal crash, which took the lives of Antoine Forest, 30, of Coteau-du-Lac in Quebec, and his first officer MacKenzie Gunther.

More than 40 others were injured in the collision at around 11.45pm on Sunday, including New York City-area firefighters Sergeant Michael Orsillo and Officer Adrian Baez.

They are expected to survive, along with flight attendant Solange Tremblay, who was hurled 330 feet from the aircraft.

As the investigation into the collision now continues, air traffic control audio revealed the truck had been cleared to cross the runway for an unrelated issue before controllers urgently ordered it to ‘stop, stop, stop’ moments before impact.

Speaking to reporters in Florida on Monday morning in response to the collision, President Trump said: ‘They made a mistake. It’s a dangerous business. That’s terrible.’

LaGuardia was shutdown until the early afternoon due to the crash, forcing thousands of passenger to scramble while airports across the country are facing severe delays due to the Department of Homeland Security shutdown.

The Big Question: How did a landing plane hit a fire truck?

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says fatal crash serves as a reminder to wear seatbelts while traveling

US Transport Secretary Sean Duffy said the Air Canada crash site at LaGuardia was a ‘reminder’ to those traveling by air or car to ‘wear a seatbelt.’

‘What is at the crash site, it was just a reminder that when you’re traveling by air, you should wear your seatbelt,’ he said.

‘If you see the videos of the air crash, wear your seatbelt when you’re on the airplane. Also in a car, wear a seatbelt. As you see from last night, they do save lives,’ he continued.

Flight attendant Solange Tremblay was strapped into a jump seat and violently thrown 330 feet clear of the aircraft when it collided with the truck, but somehow survived.

NTSB investigators stuck in TSA line while traveling to LaGuardia crash scene

National Safety Transportation Board Chair Jennifer Homendy revealed that investigators heading to the LaGuardia crash site were delayed by long TSA lines.

‘It’s been a really, really big challenge to get the entire team here, and they’re still arriving as I speak,’ she said at a Monday evening press conference.

Homendy said one investigator got stuck in a TSA line in Houston for three hours and had to ‘beg to see if we can get her through.’

The chairwoman, herself, had to drive from DC to get to the site, she added.

ICE agents could deter terrorists, former TSA boss says

Former TSA Administrator John Pistole, who oversaw the agency under Obama, said the ICE agents presence in airports could help deter terrorists looking to exploit the situation.

‘These long lines are a soft target for a putative terrorist, somebody who wants to come in and make a name for themselves, for their cause,’ Pistole said on CNN This Morning.

‘And so if somebody comes in, any one of these terminals around the country where we have these long lines, hundreds, thousands, perhaps, people just winding back and forth, and they see these armed officers, that may be a visible deterrent. So, that could be a good thing.’

Air Canada passenger recounts jumping of plane wing after crash

Air Canada passenger Jack Cabot, 22, recalled the moment of the collision at LaGuardia Airport and the aftermath of getting to safety.

‘As we were landing, the plane started veering right really quickly. It felt like it had completely lost control. I put my head down, ducked between my arms, and prayed. There was a lot of screaming; everybody was terrified, and I was completely panicked,’ he told Business Insider.

‘When I looked toward the front of the plane, it seemed to have completely crumpled inward, like a wall of broken parts.

‘A woman behind me suggested we go out the emergency exit. I didn’t think the plane was a good place to be, so we all got in a line and headed out one by one. It wasn’t too big a plane, so we jumped onto the wing and then took another 4 or 5-foot drop onto the ground.’

LaGuardia continues to experience delays

The security line inside of Terminal B at LaGuardia this morning reportedly stretches into a snaking U shape across the terminal grounds.

Airport workers are telling passengers wait time is minimum two hours. Electronic signs that typically estimate wait times are blank, according to the New York Times.

Out of 1,000 flights scheduled to take off by 10am on Tuesday morning, at least half were canceled according to FlightAware.

Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board said in a news conference on Monday that the collision investigation is ‘going to take some time’ with the amount of debris on the runway that would need to be examined and documented.

Airports ask travelers to arrive hours ahead of flights

George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston warned that security wait times are over four hours long on Tuesday.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has also encouraged flyers to arrive at least four hours early and allow additional time if they have checked luggage.

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport said travelers should plan to arrive three hours ahead of scheduled departure on Tuesday.

TSA chaos could continue through Easter after Trump issues holiday ‘threat’

As the DHS shutdown crossed into week five, Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune offered Donald Trump a deal to fund all divisions within the department other than ICE.

Thune offered Trump a package that Democrats would back, as well as a handful of Republicans, per Punchbowl News.

The President reportedly rejected the offer, which would have funded TSA, stopped chaos at airports, and still not given in to top Democrat demands such as banning immigration agents from wearing masks.

Trump has also stated that he wants lawmakers to forgo their upcoming two-week Easter break, adding that he would shame lawmakers for going on vacation.

He even said he would host GOP senators and their families at the White House for Easter if they can’t get a deal together.

Terrified pilot had chilling LaGuardia Airport premonition and begged ‘Please do something!’ months before deadly runway crash

LaGuardia Airport was a ticking timebomb before Sunday night’s deadly runway crash that killed two, multiple pilots warned in the months leading up to the tragedy.

Last summer, one pilot issued a chilling warning about LaGuardia to NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System, urging aviation authorities to ‘please do something’ before a tragedy occurs.

‘The pace of operations is building in LGA (LaGuardia). The controllers are pushing the line,’ the pilot said in the warning, which was first reported by a CNN review of government records.

The pilot cited a close call at the New York airport when air traffic controllers failed to properly guide multiple aircraft in its airspace.

Trump says ICE will arrest migrants at airports

Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that ICE agents will arrest migrants while they are patrolling at US airports.

‘Yeah. That’s why the Democrats are going crazy,’ Trump said.

‘[ICE] loves it because they’re able to now arrest illegals as they come into the country. It’s very fertile territory.’

He also addressed his decision to require ICE agents to not wear masks while working at the airports.

‘ICE has done very well. I’m a big believer that they should be able to wear masks when they go and hunt down murderers, criminals and others, but for purposes of the airport, I’ve requested that they take off the masks and I believe they are willing to do that,’ he said.

Trump suggested that the National Guard could be brought in to help with airport security amid the DHS shutdown.

‘I want to thank ICE because they stepped in so, so strongly. They’ll do great. And if that’s not enough, I’ll bring in the National Guard,’ he told reporters on Monday.
