The National Weather Service has warned of the possibility of another winter storm battering the eastern half of the US this upcoming weekend.

‘Potential is increasing for another significant winter storm to impact the eastern United States this coming weekend,’ NWS wrote on X.

While forecasters noted it is too soon to know the details of the storm, very cold temperatures will blanket the eastern half of the US into next week.

While that is going on, a high-altitude disturbance will move from Canada on Thursday and deepen across the US on Sunday, leading to a strong surface low-pressure system.

WSVN Meteorologist Dylan Federico also wrote on X, ‘The cold coming this weekend is the real deal! The EURO is one of the coldest model runs I’ve ever seen, with below-zero wind chills down to the Gulf Coast on Saturday morning!’

Boston Logan International Airport has issued a ground stop due to a request from an airline.

Flights had already been delayed at least 80 minutes due to snow and ice, according to the FAA.

The St. Louis Fire Department shared harrowing footage of a dog being rescued from icy waters.

‘In the grip of single-digit temperatures, a dog wandered onto the ice and suddenly found itself in a life-threatening situation,’ the fire department wrote on X.

‘The ice gave way, leaving the dog trapped in frigid water, unable to swim to safety as the cold quickly took its toll.’

Rescue crews ‘navigated the frozen conditions, and reached the dog just in time, carefully pulling it from the icy water and bringing it to safety.’

The fire department said the dog is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery.

Amtrak warned that train services are still being impacted by the winter storm.

‘Winter Storm Fern has passed, but some service cancellations or adjustments may still be needed as we work to restore normal operations,’ Amtrak wrote on X.

‘We continue to monitor conditions along your travel route, and depending on any remaining impacts, your trip may be affected. We’re providing this update in advance so you can plan accordingly.’

The National Weather Service forecasted ‘dangerous cold’ temperatures in Nashville and throughout Tennessee for Monday night.

‘Most areas are likely to stay sub-freezing all week,’ the national weather service wrote on X.

University of Mississippi announced that it has closed its Oxford campus until February 1 ‘due to continued extreme winter weather conditions and ongoing recovery efforts.’

‘The university experienced significant impacts from the ice storm and is working diligently to restore operations and begin recovery efforts,’ the school wrote on X.

‘This includes reinstating power, clearing roads and walkways, removing trees and debris, and assessing and addressing ongoing impacts to buildings and campus infrastructure.’

The Tennessee Department of Transportation shared footage of a fallen highway sign that struck a semi truck on I-65 NB in Davidson County.

Two horses were rescued from a frozen pond in Missouri after they walked out on the snow-covered ice on Monday.

‘Personnel were able to break a path and lead the horses out of the water,’ Cuba Fire Protection District said on Facebook.

‘The horses were checked by a local veterinarian and found the horses to be in good condition.’

The death toll from Winter Storm Fern has risen to 25, according to the Associated Press.

In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office said at least eight people were found dead outside as temperatures plunged between Saturday and Monday morning, though the cause of their deaths remained under investigation.

In Emporia, Kansas, police searching with bloodhounds found a 28-year-old teacher dead and covered in snow. Police said she had was last seen leaving a bar without her coat and phone.

Police said snowplows backed into two people who died in Norwood, Massachusetts, and Dayton, Ohio. And authorities said two teenagers, one in Arkansas and another in Texas, were killed in sledding accidents.

Officials reported three deaths apiece in Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Tennessee; two deaths in Mississippi; and one in New Jersey.

Over 4,816 flights have been canceled, and 5,124 have been delayed as of 2.45pm ET Monday, according to FlightAware.

The FAA said airports in Philadelphia, New York, Dallas, Washington, DC and Boston are experiencing ground delays due to snow and ice.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani jokingly invited students who were mad at him for ordering a remote learning day to throw snowballs at him.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the mayor said he visited a virtual classroom and ‘reiterated my offer to students that they could pelt me in the face with a snowball.’

‘They were very excited about that, and asked for a time and place.’
