A teenage boy who drowned while swimming at a popular lagoon has been identified.

Ayat Hossain, 13, was swimming with two other teenagers at Werri Lagoon near Gerringong on the NSW south coast at about 5.15pm on Wednesday when the group encountered trouble.

The 16-year-old and 18-year-old managed to get out of the water without assistance while a lifeguard pulled Ayat to shore unresponsive.

Emergency services rushed to the lagoon and tried to revive Ayat but he was declared dead at the scene.

A service will be held for him at Lakemba Mosque on Thursday.

‘Two teenage boys made their own way to safety with a third brought to shore by a lifeguard; however, the boy was unable to be revived,’ NSW police said.
