A gunman killed two people and injured two police officers after opening fire inside an Indiana grocery store.

The bullets rang out on Monday at around 5:15 pm at a Martin’s Supermarket on East Jackson Boulevard in Elkhart, WNDU reported.

Police confirmed that three people were shot dead – including the suspected gunman.

In addition to the fatalities, two police officers were injured and taken to the hospital. They were reported to be in stable condition.

It was still unclear what prompted the shooting and how the gunman died.

Erin Swary, a pregnant mother who was inside the store, described the horrors she witnessed when the events unfolded.

‘I did my grocery shopping and was checking out and I was the only one at the particular checkout,’ she told WNDU.

‘There were people over at self-checkout. I didn’t really pay much attention to them, I was just watching my bill go up and just making small talk with the bagger.

On Monday evening around 5:15 pm, bullets rang through a Martin’s Supermarket on East Jackson Boulevard in Elkhart

It is still unclear what prompted the shooting inside the Martin’s and what happened once police arrived

‘Then we heard a pop and honestly I thought it was a balloon that popped.’

She realized something was truly wrong when she saw other shoppers start to duck to the ground.

After she dropped to the floor, she said she heard six or eight more gunshots and was ‘frozen’ with fear.

‘All I could think of when I was down there was of my kids,’ she revealed as she started choking up.

‘And if you came around that corner, I thought I would probably be gone or shot as well. So I just stayed there and tried to stay calm.’

Swary saw people running to the back of the store, but stayed on the ground a bit longer. She then got up and ran into the stock room before safely escaping.

She outlined the moments before shots were fired: ‘There was no arguing, there was no nothing beforehand. There was no sounds other than that first pop.’

The mother-of-two said she did not see the culprit, but saw police chasing someone and heard several more gunshots once she fled the store.

‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected. It’s a sad day in Elkhart,’ Jessica McBrier, public information officer for the Elkhart Police Department said.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating the tragedy. DailyMail.com has reached out to the Elkhart Police Department for comment.

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun addressed the shooting on X, writing: ‘As details emerge about the shooting in Elkhart, we are in communication with state and local law enforcement. Maureen and I are praying for the victims and their families.’

‘Please keep all affected in your prayers as we await more information,’ Senator Todd Young posted.

This is the second deadly shooting Elkhart saw in the last 24 hours. On Sunday evening, an 18-year-old was shot near 6th Street and Hively Avenue at around 11:15 pm, WNDU reported.

The victim, later identified as Fernanda Leon of Osceola, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police arrested a man near the area where Leon was shot early Monday morning after an hour-long standoff, The Independent reported.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention ranked Indiana the US state with the 18th highest number of firearm-related deaths, based on 2022 data.
