Armed police scramble to Lewisham after man seen shouting and brandishing knife outside window

Armed police have raced to Lewisham after a dressing gown-clad man was seen shouting and brandishing a knife outside a window. 

Officers holding firearms placed the south-east London high street under lockdown this morning, amid fears of a ‘hostage situation’. The incident is currently ongoing.

Police said they are speaking to the shirtless man and are trying to work out if anyone else is inside the property. 

Footage from the scene show emergency services outside of the HSBC bank, with a police cordon around the area between Lee High Road, Belmont Hill and A2211 Rennell Street. 

Traffic in the area is being diverted and there are reports of congestion on nearby roads. 

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: ‘Police were called to a disturbance on Lewisham High Street, at around 10:45hrs on Monday, 10 February.

‘Officers are currently in attendance at the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade.

Police at the scene this afternoon amid fears the incident could be a ‘hostage situation’ 

At least two armed police officers could be seen in the nearby area during the incident 

Emergency services are present in the area while police try to find out if there is anyone else inside the property 

Traffic in the area is being diverted and there are reports of congestion on nearby roads

‘We are speaking to a man inside an address at the location. Enquiries are ongoing to establish whether anyone else is inside the property.

‘Lewisham High Street section of the A20 remains closed while the incident is ongoing.’

Lewisham MPS added on social media platform X: ‘We are aware of social media reports about an incident in Lewisham High Street.

‘Officers are currently in attendance at a residential address at the location speaking to a man inside the property.’

London Ambulance Service said: ‘We are responding to this incident alongside colleagues from the @metpoliceuk and @LondonFire and remain on scene as a precaution.’
