A major police operation is underway after shots were fired at a group of men in a beachside suburb.

Police were called to The Boulevarde in Brighton-Le-Sands in Sydney‘s south at about 3.15pm on Tuesday, following reports of a drive-by shooting.

Officers were told an Audi SUV turned into The Boulevarde, from The Grand Parade, where an unknown person in the vehicle shot in the direction of three men standing near a parked car.

The three men and the Audi left the scene before police arrived. There are no reports of injuries.

Police located three cars nearby with bullet holes, including one with a damaged windscreen

A nearby building was also damaged.

A car matching the description of the Audi SUV was also found alight 11km away in Windarra Street, Narwee a short time later.

Two crime scenes have been established in the area as an investigation was launched.

Dozens of police remain at both scenes and The Boulevarde remains closed between The Grand Parade and Trafalgar Street.

Police are investigating possible links to organised crime.

Susan told radio station 2GB that her husband was stuck in traffic on Grand Parade when he saw bullets being shot from a moving car before fleeing the scene.

‘Then the car sped off and was speeding throughout all the traffic,’ she said.

‘Complete shock, he’s in shock.’

One witness told Seven News they heard up to five shots being fired while another recalled several popping sounds, which they initially thought were fireworks.

Anyone with information about the incident, dashcam or CCTV is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A crime scene was also established in Narwee where police found a car set alight matching the description of the Audi SUV involved in the shooting

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, leaving behind only the burnt-out shell of a car on Windarra Street in Narwee
