An autistic schoolgirl plotted to blow up a synagogue and became ‘fixated’ on Hitler after being groomed by a far-right extremist over the internet, an inquest heard today. Rhianan Rudd, 16, had downloaded guides on how to make a pipe bomb, homemade weapons and guerilla warfare and scratched a swastika into her forehead after being ‘radicalised’ by a white supremacist based in the USA. The vulnerable teenager was the youngest person ever to be charged with terror offences in the UK. She was found dead at a children’s home in May 2022, five months after the Home Office ruled she was the victim of grooming and terrorism charges against her were dropped. It is believed she took her own life. A court heard today how Rhianan created a shine to Adolf Hitler. The teenager’s mother, Emily Carter, believes her daughter should have been treated as a ‘victim rather than a terrorist’. The inquest into Rhianan’s death will look at the involvement of agencies leading up to her death, including MI5, social services and counter-terror police.
Mike Amesbury dodges questions over if he will quit as an MP as he walks free from jail after appeal
Shamed former Labour MP Mike Amesbury has walked free from court having served just three days behind bars for punching one of his constituents, after successfully appealing against his sentence. The 55-year-old was jailed for 10 weeks on Monday for battering Paul Fellows, 45, after a 2am argument by a taxi rank in Amesbury’s home town of Frodsham, Cheshire that was caught on camera. But at Chester Crown Court today a judge suspended the jail term for two years, meaning the MP for Runcorn and Helsby will not have to return to prison if he commits no further criminal acts. Amesbury refused to say if he was going to resign as an MP as he was picked up by a waiting car from court. Saying he wanted to ‘reiterate’ his previous apology to Mr Fellows, he added: ‘I’m now going to go and see my family and go home.’ He said he would be making a further comment at a later date. Judge Steven Everett said the decision had been a ‘very fine line’ and told the MP he will have to abide by a four-month alcohol monitoring requirement and take part in an anger management course.

Police are planning to return to Claudia Lawrence’s house after a ‘secret’ loft at the missing woman’s home was discovered above clothing behind wardrobe doors. The chef was 35 years old when she failed to report for work at York University in March 2009 in what became one of the best-known unsolved crimes in decades. North Yorkshire Police conducted two investigations relating to Miss Lawrence’s disappearance and suspected murder, although no charges were ever brought. But journalist Tom McDermott recently made a series of major discoveries with Miss Lawrence’s mother Joan when they visited the house, which remains empty. Her mother Joan Lawrence, 81, said she had ‘absolutely no idea’ the secret loft existed until she visited recently with a podcast crew, the Mirror first reported. Although she wants the new area to be searched after the bombshell revelation, she said she doesn’t want police inside the property as she has ‘lost all faith and trust in them’. She has vowed ‘never’ to give North Yorkshire Police the keys to Claudia’s home saying the last time officers searched the property they left it a ‘mess’.
