Westpac, St George experience another major outage

Westpac and St George banks have suffered outages for a third day in a row.

Customers have been frustrated throughout the week by repeated outages which left them unable to use internet banking or the banks’ apps.

Many have complained they have been unable to access their money, while both banks try to assure customers they are fixing the issue.

‘It really is not good enough. Their job is to facilitate the payment system and there appears to be a system failure here. People cannot access their funds, buy groceries, pay their staff, etc. Please help!’ one person wrote on X.

‘It is a 3rd time? How many times more? I am planning to change from your bank after being a customer for 20 years. It can’t last like this any longer,’ said another.

Westpac for the third time this week apologised to customers.

‘We’re aware that customers are experiencing further issues accessing online and mobile banking. Our teams are currently working to fix the issue. We apologise for the inconvenience and will continue to share updates here,’ a spokesperson said.

St George, which is a subsidiary of Westpac, issued the same statement.

A major Westpac tech outage has caused the app and online banking to stop working for thousands of Australians, leaving them unable to access their money

St George also suffered an outage on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

Issues had been resolved with both banks on Monday and Tuesday but the problem reoccurred on Wednesday.

At 8am on Wednesday, there were nearly 1,700 complaints made about Westpac to Downdetector.

For St George, that number spiked at 270 complaints on Wednesday morning.

Thousands of Westpac and St George customers had reported the same issues on Monday and Tuesday.

The reason for the outages are not yet known.

Westpac customers were furious to find they couldn’t access the app or online banking for the third day in a row

It comes just days after Westpac ended cardless cash withdrawals, forcing customers to use a physical bank card to withdraw money from an ATM.

‘As part of continually reviewing our products and services, Westpac will no longer offer the cardless cash withdrawal feature,’ Westpac announced.

It assured customers they can still withdraw from ATMs but must use their physical card, while cash transactions can also be made at branches across the country.

Westpac also confirmed that cardless cash deposits would still be available to customers.
